The Institute of International Politics and Economics (IIPE), together with the Moscow-based Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, organized a roundtable titled “European Security: New Challenges and New Opportunities”. Five panels were held, addressing the impact of the Ukraine conflict on European security, dilemmas of Euro-Atlanticism and the issues of strategic autonomy of the EU and NATO, the project of the European Political Community, Balkan security dynamics, as well as the opportunities and prospects for green transition in Russia and Serbia.
On behalf of the IIPE, presentations were delivered by Dr. Veljko Blagojević, Senior Research Fellow and the Head of the Center for Neighboring and Mediterranean Studies, Dr. Nebojša Vuković and Dr. Bogdan Stojanović, Research Fellows. Dr. Blagojević emphasized the issue of the lack of strategic thinking within the EU regarding Russia and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, concluding that the EU is “an object, not a subject in the global strategic game”. Addressing the issues of (in)security in the Balkans, Dr. Vuković pointed out the challenges concerning Kosovo and Metohija, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, and he also touched on Belgrade’s official stance regarding the non-imposing sanctions against Russia. In his presentation, Dr. Stojanović focused on Serbia’s energy transition, particularly the prospects for building a nuclear power plant in Serbia, raising the question of potential cooperation with Russia in that field.
The roundtable was held in an online format.
