The Institute of International Politics and Economics organized the discussion panel: “25 years since NATO’s aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia” as part of the Winter School of International Relations.
After the attendees were greeted by the Director of the Institute, Professor Branislav Đorđević, a tribute was paid to all the citizens who died in this unfortunate event. The introductory lecture on the subject of NATO aggression from the aspect of international law was held by Dr. Duško Dimitrijević, Professorial fellow of the Institute and moderator of the meeting. In the continuation of the lecture, Academician and Professor Boris Krivokapić presented his observations on NATO aggression through a comparative legal analysis of international and domestic law.
The audience of the Winter School of International Relations had the opportunity to hear a lecture of the retired ambassador, Mr. Bratislav Đorđević, who once served in the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, and who presented his personal impressions and experiences related to the activities of the UN Security Council at the time of NATO aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
At the end, Professor Nebojša Raičević, the current dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Niš, gave a lecture on the legality of the NATO intervention against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
In the discussion that followed, the common position was confirmed that NATO’s aggression was an illegal act, contrary to general international law that prohibits the use of force and the threat of the use of force against the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of states. As such, this act could not be justified by any reasons of any nature, political, economic, military, humanitarian or otherwise. The aggression was undertaken through a unilateral armed intervention without the approval of the Security Council, which per se, represented a violation of international peace and security.
