Institute of International Politics and Economics along with the Institute of Eurasian Studies of the Development and Research Center of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing, jointly organised a round table “War in the Middle East: Perspectives from Serbia and China”.
At the opening of the round table audience was addressed by Dr. Li Yongquan, Director of the Institute of Eurasian Studies, and Prof. Dr. Branislav Đorđević, Director of the Institute of International Politics and Economics.
From the Chinese side, speakers included Dr. Wu Sike, former Special Envoy of China for the Middle East; Dr. Li Shaoyie, Dean of the Arabic Institute at Ningxia University; and Prof. Dr. Tian Wenlin, Professor at the Institute of International Relations at Peking University. From the Serbian side, participants included Dr. Dušan Proroković, Head of the IIPE’s Centre for Eurasian Studies; Dr. Slobodan Janković, Head of the IIPE’s Centre for Neighbouring and Mediterranean Countries; and Dr. Bogdan Stojanović, Research Fellow at the IIPE.
This round table provided an important space for dialogue and the presentation of different perspectives on critical events in the Middle East – primarily the conflict between Israel and Palestine – enriching the understanding of this region from the standpoint of the foreign policies of the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Serbia. The presentations were followed by discussion on the current security situation in the Gaza Strip and possible scenarios for de-escalating the ongoing armed conflict, which lasts for more than two months.
