International Scientific Conference

The Institute of International Politics and Economics hosted representatives of the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing and Foreign Studies University, Beijing, on June 16-19th 2016, within the official visit of the President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping to Serbia.

On that occasion, the IIPE has organized an international scientific conference entitled „Danube River and New Silk Road“, on June 17th, in cooperation with authorized ministries of the Republic of Serbia. Regarding the fruitful scientific cooperation between IIPE and partners from China over the past few years, the conference aimed at scientific observing the possible functional linking the Danube'с potential with Chinese's global strategy of development of the New Silk Road, through both its geopolitical and geo-economic vision: Silk Road Economic Belt and Maritime Silk Road, for the 21st century.

After prof. Branislav Đorđević, Director of IIPE, had opened the Conference and welcomed participants, welcome speeches were also given by Mr. Dejan Trifunović, Secretary of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Republic of Serbia, Mr. Nikola Tanić, Assistant Minister of the Education, Science and Technological Development, Republic of Serbia, Mr. Aleksandar Janković, Head of the Department for Asia, Australia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Serbia and Mr. Huang Ping, Director General of the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing. Prof. Huang Ping stressed the importance of “New Silk Road” project for improving future cooperation between Serbia and China, and pointed out the most important areas of cooperation between two countries in the future.

The conference presented 26 research papers related to “New silk road” as far-reaching development strategy, Danube in a function of the ”New silk road”, Serbia as important factor in realization of the project and possible challenges in the implementation of the project. Four panel sessions of the conference were moderated by Duško Dimitrijević, Professorial Fellow of IIPE, Mrs. Liu Zuokui, Director of the Division of Central and Eastern European Studies, Institute of European Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, Sanja Jelisavac-Trošić, Research Fellow of IIPE and Edita Stojić-Karanović, former director of IIPE.

After successful scientific conference, members of the Chinese delegation, accompanied with their hosts, representatives of the IIPE, paid a visit the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, the Chinese Center of the "John Naisbitt" University and the “Military Museum", Belgrade.
