Besides the presenters from Serbia, the conference gathered dozen researchers from Brazil, the United Kingdom, Russia, the United States, France, Israel, Slovakia, Austria, Turkey, Romania, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The participants concluded that even ten years after the unilateral Declaration of independence of the so-called Republic of Kosovo, this issue remains unresolved. In the last decade “Kosovo precedent” has been instrumentalised five times providing a legal and political grounds for organising the referenda and proclaiming independence in South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Catalonia, the Iraqi part of Kurdistan and Crimea. The “Kosovo case” is not only the outcome of a complex Serbian-Albanian relations and the civil war in Yugoslavia, but it also reflects the changing balance of power in the global arena in the early 21st century. The conference participants emphasized the need for continuing analysis of the prospects for a lasting solution of the Kosovo case, because otherwise it is very likely that numerous separatistic movements across the world will continue misusing the “Kosovo case”, and thus undermine regional security.
